Anxiety Depression and PTSD

Anxiety Depression and PTSD

Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be debilitating conditions that make it a lot harder to enjoy your life. Thankfully, therapy can help. At Annahaven Behavioral Health Services in North Haven and West Haven, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Anna Martin is proud to help clients work through these conditions. Here, we'll take a look at some of the causes and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Causes of Anxiety, Depression, and PTSD

There are many factors that can contribute to the development of anxiety, depression, and PTSD, including:

  • Major life changes
  • Stressful events
  • Medical problems
  • Medication and/or medication changes
  • Genetics and inherited personality traits
  • Brain chemistry
  • Lack of social support

While PTSD is related to one or more traumatic events, anxiety and depression can occur with less clear causes.

Symptoms of Anxiety, Depression, and PTSD

Anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms can depend on many factors. You may find that your symptoms are constant over time, or you may find that your symptoms ebb and flow with life's changes.

Symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD can include:

  • Sleep issues, including insomnia
  • Ongoing negative emotions, including worry, dread, sadness, and fear
  • Isolation from friends and family
  • Difficulty participating in activities that you used to enjoy

In addition, there are some symptoms that are more typical of PTSD, including difficulty remembering the details of the traumatic event, exaggerated feelings of blame, angry outbursts, avoidance of situations that bring back memories of the trauma, feeling detached from others, and physiological reactions like increased heart rate and blood pressure.

PTSD, anxiety, and depression can occur as a triad of disorders or in different combinations. Your trauma therapist will work with you to determine your diagnosis and create an appropriate course of treatment for your unique needs.
